The push for trustworthy sustainability claims and transparent global supply chains just took a major step forward. UN/CEFACT has officially released Recommendation No. 49: Transparency at Scale for public review.
This recommendation sets a policy framework to enhance transparency and traceability in global supply chains. If you are a customs officer, manufacturer, supplier, retailer, regulator, or any other participant in global trade, the ability to communicate and verify claims is critical. It is critical for digital trust. It is critical to combatting greenwashing. It is critical for organisations to compete based on the good work they do.
Recommendation 49 makes the case that transparency is a precondition for the trustworthiness of sustainability claims.
A central component of this recommendation is the United Nations Transparency Protocol (UNTP), which provides the technical specifications needed to implement transparency at scale.
Key Principles
Recommendation 49 and the UNTP focus on integrating digital tools that enhance data integrity, interoperability, and compliance with regulatory and market requirements.
Key elements of the framework include:
- Digital Product Passports (DPP) – Structured, verifiable data attached to products for lifecycle tracking and compliance.
- Digital Conformity Credentials (DCC) – Digital proof of compliance with regulations and sustainability standards.
- Digital Traceability Events (DTE) – Transparent tracking of events across supply chains to support accountability.
- Verifiable Credentials (VC) – Secure, tamper-proof digital records to authenticate sustainability claims.
Why Contribute to Recommendation 49?
If you have an interest in global trade, sustainability in supply chains, combatting greenwashing, digital trust, traceability, and transparency, this is your opportunity to have a direct impact on shaping global transparency standards.
By participating in the public review, you can:
- Provide feedback on how the principles align with real-world business operations and regulatory environments.
- Help shape a framework that balances transparency with efficiency and feasibility.
- Contribute to standards that could streamline regulatory approvals and make cross-border trade more seamless.
- Assist in refining digital traceability measures that improve trust and accountability.
