In a significant step forward for global trade transparency and sustainability, the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) has launched a project to develop a Responsible Business Transparency Protocol (RBTP) for the electrical, electronic, and automotive industries. This will be an extension of the United Nations Transparency Protocol (UNTP) and is expected to include a set of Credential Extensions to support RBA members around the world as they work to align with the UNTP.
This milestone underscores the growing momentum behind a standardized approach to enabling global supply chains to be more transparent, accountable, and aligned with sustainable development goals.
What Is the United Nations Transparency Protocol?
The UNTP provides a framework for digitizing, sharing, and verifying supply chain data for businesses, regulators, global trade actors, customers, and other stakeholders. By enabling digital product passports, barcode integrations, and real-time data sharing, the protocol simplifies complex compliance requirements and promotes trust in global trade.
About the Responsible Business Alliance
The Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) is the world's largest industry coalition dedicated to responsible business conduct in global supply chains. Founded in 2004, the RBA’s core membership comprises more than 250 companies across sectors such as electronics, retail, automotive, and toys. The RBA and its initiatives represent over 600 members, generating a combined annual revenue of more than $8 trillion.
The RBA works to drive sustainable value for workers, the environment, and businesses throughout the global supply chain. Through its Code of Conduct, members commit to upholding high standards in labor rights, health and safety, environmental responsibility, ethics, and management systems.
The RBA’s UNTP Extensions
The RBA’s implementation statement expresses that the organization is building on the foundational capabilities provided by the UNTP to deliver a suite of interoperability standards for various industries.
- Responsible Minerals Initiative Credential (RMIC): Attests to responsible sourcing of minerals.
- Responsible Labour Initiative Credential (RLIC): Ensures the rights of workers vulnerable to forced labor.
- Responsible Environment Initiative Credential (REIC): Evaluates sustainability performance in manufacturing.
- Responsible Factory Initiative Credential (RFIC): Confirms a supplier facility meets the RBA Code of Practice.
- Electrical Goods Passport (EGP): A digital product passport for ESG standards.
- Digital Battery Passport (DBP): Meets RBA members' needs and EU standards.
- Electrical Facility Record (EFR): Details sustainability performance of manufacturing facilities.
The Road Ahead
This announcement signals that the RBA is taking a leadership role in global supply chain transparency. As the UNTP gains traction, businesses that embrace robust, digital-first transparency frameworks will position themselves as leaders in compliance and competitive advantage.
For businesses, the message is clear: adopting tools like the UNTP represents a business opportunity to build trust, improve efficiency, and drive long-term value.
