Keeping You in the Loop on UNTP Progress - APRIL 2025

April brought steady progress across pilots, policy, and sector adoption. Here’s what’s been happening—and what to watch for next.

  • Real-World Pilots Underway:
    • Responsible Business Alliance: Electronics and automotive pilots are underway, connecting finished goods to critical minerals, with confidentiality challenges top of mind.
    • Textiles, Batteries: Early work is extending traceability deeper into global supply chains (including tier 3/4 suppliers).
    • Synergy with European Tech Initiatives: UNTP pilots are aligning with major business and tech pilots in Europe, moving toward global interoperability.
  • Funding Accelerates Sector Activity:

New EU funding is supporting the UNTP Secretariat and expanding pilot activity, especially in critical raw materials and garment/footwear. More sectors are preparing for real-world interoperability testing.

  • Recommendation 49 Nears Final Review:

The final draft of UN/CEFACT’s “Transparency at Scale” (Rec 49) is set for review at the July plenary in Geneva. Guidance now focuses on broad design principles—making it more adaptable for multiple frameworks beyond just UNTP.

  • Roadmap Update:

UNTP is at v0.5. Next steps: v0.6 (technical fixes), v0.7 (business features such as circularity), then a stable 1.0 (targeting autumn 2025).

    • Community input invited: 90+ open GitHub issues are being triaged and assigned to release milestones.
    • Sub-working groups: Are forming, each with clear terms of reference, to keep momentum across technical and business priorities.
  • Scheme Register & Vocabulary Work:

A new draft Sustainability Vocabulary Catalog offers a streamlined way for scheme owners to register and reference their own criteria, aiming for machine-readable links between standards.

  • Governance Expanding:

Subgroups focused on conformity, product passports, tech, and adoption/business are now forming. Those with relevant expertise and interests are encouraged to get involved as the governance model evolves.
